Waschchemie refers to the scientific principles and chemical compounds involved in the process of washing. It encompasses the study of how detergents and other cleaning agents interact with dirt, stains, and fabrics to achieve cleanliness. The effectiveness of washing is largely determined by the chemical properties of the substances used.

Detergents are the primary chemical agents in washing. They are surfactants, which means they have a hydrophilic (water-attracting) head and a hydrophobic (oil-attracting) tail. This dual nature allows them to emulsify grease and oil, breaking them down into smaller particles that can be suspended in water and rinsed away. Beyond surfactants, detergents often contain builders, which soften water by sequestering mineral ions like calcium and magnesium, enhancing the detergent's performance. Enzymes are another crucial component, capable of breaking down specific types of stains such as proteins, starches, and fats. Bleaching agents are used to remove stubborn colored stains and whiten fabrics by oxidizing colored molecules. Optical brighteners are also common, absorbing UV light and re-emitting it as visible blue light, making fabrics appear brighter and whiter.
