Warmblüter

Warmblüter is a term used in horse breeding and equestrianism to categorize horses of a certain temperament and build. The term, literally translating to "warm-blooded" in German, refers to horses that are descendants of lighter, hotter-blooded horses like Arabians and Barbs, crossed with heavier, colder-blooded horses such as draft breeds. This blending of lineages results in a horse that possesses more refinement and athleticism than a cold-blooded horse, yet is generally more docile and less excitable than a hot-blooded horse.

Warmblüter are typically known for their athletic ability, making them well-suited for various equestrian disciplines including dressage, show jumping, and eventing. They are often described as having a good temperament, being trainable, intelligent, and willing. Their physical characteristics usually include a medium build, elegant conformation, and a lively but controlled spirit. Many popular sport horse breeds, such as the Hanoverian, Holsteiner, Dutch Warmblood, and Selle Français, fall under the warmblood classification. These horses are selectively bred for specific performance traits, leading to a wide range of types within the warmblood category, each suited to different equestrian pursuits.
