WLANRouter

A WLAN router is a device that combines a wireless access point and a router to create and manage a wireless local area network (WLAN). It connects local devices such as computers, smartphones, and IoT devices to the internet through a modem or gateway, and routes traffic between the LAN and the wider network, often also providing a firewall and NAT.

Most WLAN routers implement one or more IEEE 802.11 wireless standards, commonly 802.11n/ac/ax, operating in 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, with newer models supporting tri-band or multi-user features. The actual throughput depends on the standard, hardware, and network conditions.

Key security features include wireless encryption such as WPA2 and WPA3, guest networks, firewall, intrusion protection, and sometimes VPN support, parental controls, and quality of service (QoS) for bandwidth management. Many models offer port forwarding, Dynamic DNS, and VPN passthrough.

In use, a WLAN router can function as a standalone gateway by combining a modem and router in one device, or as a separate router connected to a modem. It can operate in router mode, bridge mode, or access point mode. It is common for households to replace legacy routers to improve range, speed, and reliability.

Configuration is typically via a web interface or mobile app, allowing settings such as SSID, security keys, guest networks, and firmware updates. Regular updates are recommended to address security and performance issues.
