Vöðvauppbygging, also known as muscle hypertrophy, is the process by which skeletal muscle cells increase in size. This growth is a physiological adaptation that occurs in response to various stimuli, most notably resistance exercise. When muscles are subjected to mechanical tension, microscopic damage to muscle fibers occurs. This damage triggers a repair process, and as part of this adaptation, the muscle fibers themselves become thicker and stronger.
