Vöðvastrengir is an Icelandic term that translates to "muscle strains" or "muscle pulls" in English. It refers to a common type of soft tissue injury where muscle fibers are stretched or torn. This typically occurs when a muscle is overused, fatigued, or subjected to sudden force. Vöðvastrengir can range in severity from a mild overstretching of fibers to a complete rupture of the muscle.

The most common causes of vöðvastrengir include sudden movements, improper lifting techniques, overuse during physical activity, and inadequate warm-up or stretching before exercise. Athletes are particularly susceptible to these injuries, but they can also happen to individuals engaged in everyday activities.

Symptoms of vöðvastrengir often include sudden pain in the affected muscle, tenderness to the touch, stiffness, reduced range of motion, and sometimes bruising or swelling. The location and intensity of the pain depend on which muscle is affected and the severity of the strain.
