Vízújrahasznosítás, commonly referred to as water recycling or water reclamation, is the process of treating wastewater to a quality that is suitable for a variety of beneficial uses. This can include irrigation of landscapes and agricultural fields, industrial processes, toilet flushing, and even, with advanced treatment, replenishment of groundwater or direct use in potable water systems. The primary goal of water recycling is to conserve freshwater resources, reduce the discharge of pollutants into the environment, and provide a reliable water supply, especially in water-scarce regions.

The process typically involves several stages of treatment. Preliminary treatment removes large solids. Primary treatment settles out suspended solids. Secondary treatment uses biological processes to break down organic matter. Tertiary treatment, or advanced treatment, involves further purification steps such as filtration, disinfection (using methods like chlorination, UV radiation, or ozonation), and sometimes membrane technologies like reverse osmosis to remove dissolved salts and other contaminants. The level of treatment depends on the intended reuse application.

Water recycling offers significant environmental and economic advantages. By reducing the demand on natural water sources like rivers and aquifers, it helps maintain ecological flows and prevents over-extraction. It also decreases the energy required for pumping and treating fresh water and can lower the costs associated with wastewater disposal.
