Overextraction refers to removing a resource faster than it can be replenished or sustainably replaced. While the term is often used in relation to water, it applies to other resources such as fossil fuels, minerals, timber, and even biological resources. It denotes a mismatch between demand or extraction capacity and the resource’s natural or managed replenishment, with potential for depletion and systemic risk.

In water resources, overextraction occurs when withdrawals from aquifers, rivers, or lakes exceed recharge or natural flow, leading to groundwater decline, reduced surface water, land subsidence, and ecological degradation. Agriculture and industry are common drivers, but climate variability, population growth, and regulation gaps also play roles.

Mitigation strategies emphasize sustainable management: setting and enforcing extraction limits, improving efficiency, expanding water reuse and recharge, and aligning pricing or rights with resource value. Integrated planning across sectors and stages of the resource cycle helps reconcile demand with replenishment.
