Værdistryring

Værdistryring is a term used in Norwegian business discourse to describe processes and events that erode the value of an asset, investment, brand, or organization. It is not a formal accounting term in IFRS or GAAP, but it is commonly used to discuss the phenomenon of value loss beyond ordinary depreciation.

Causes include strategic errors, market disruption, technological change, reputational damage, regulatory or legal liabilities, inflation and currency shifts, or governance failures. External shocks such as a financial crisis or environmental liabilities can also contribute to værdistryring.

Mechanisms by which value is destroyed include impairments and write-downs of goodwill or other assets, obsolescence leading to reduced market value, aggressive pricing or loss-making investments, and negative market perceptions that depress future cash flows. In accounting, impairment tests and asset write-downs capture part of værdistryring, but much of the effect may occur through reduced profitability or increased risk that is not immediately reflected on the balance sheet.

Impacts can be material, affecting equity, creditworthiness, and investor confidence, and may necessitate strategic reviews, restructuring, cost-cutting, or divestment. Companies can mitigate værdistryring through value-based management, rigorous risk assessment, scenario planning, transparent reporting, and proactive governance.
