Våtfoder

Våtfoder, often translated as wet food, is a type of pet food characterized by its high moisture content, typically ranging from 70% to 80%. This contrasts with dry pet food, also known as kibble, which has a much lower moisture level. Våtfoder is usually packaged in cans, pouches, or trays. Its primary ingredients commonly include meat or fish, water or broth, and sometimes grains or vegetables.

The high moisture content in våtfoder offers several potential benefits for pets. It contributes to hydration, which can be particularly advantageous for animals that do not drink much water or have certain health conditions requiring increased fluid intake. The palatability of våtfoder is often higher than dry food for many pets due to its texture and aroma, making it a good option for picky eaters or older animals with diminished senses.

From a nutritional standpoint, våtfoder can be formulated to provide complete and balanced nutrition for a pet's life stage. It often contains a higher proportion of protein and fewer carbohydrates compared to some dry food options. The manufacturing process typically involves cooking the ingredients together and sealing them in airtight containers, which helps preserve nutrients and prevent spoilage.

However, våtfoder also has some considerations. Its higher moisture content means that per calorie, it is often less calorie-dense than dry food, so pets may need to consume a larger volume. Once opened, våtfoder usually requires refrigeration and has a shorter shelf life than dry food. Dental health is another factor, as the softer texture of wet food does not provide the same abrasive cleaning action as kibble, which some believe can contribute to plaque removal.
