Växelläsare

Växelläsare, a Swedish term, translates to "gear reader" or "gear viewer" in English. It refers to a component or system that displays the currently selected gear in a vehicle. This is most commonly found in manual transmission vehicles, where a driver needs to know which gear they are in for optimal performance and control.

The visual representation of the gear selection can take various forms. In older vehicles, this might be a simple mechanical indicator, often a needle or pointer moving across a numbered dial. More modern cars typically utilize digital displays, either integrated into the instrument cluster alongside the speedometer and tachometer, or as a separate small screen. These digital readouts are often LED or LCD based, providing clear and immediate information.

In automatic transmission vehicles, the concept of a "växelläsare" is also present, though the driver usually selects a driving mode (like P, R, N, D, S, or L) rather than individual gears. The display in these cases shows the selected mode.

The primary function of a växelläsare is to enhance driver awareness and aid in efficient driving. Knowing the current gear helps prevent over-revving or lugging the engine, contributing to fuel economy and reduced wear on the drivetrain.
