Väsymisvaikutuksiin, often translated as fatigue effects or strain effects, refers to the degradation of material properties or structural integrity due to repeated loading or cyclic stresses. This phenomenon is a critical consideration in engineering and materials science, particularly for components subjected to dynamic environments.

The core principle behind väsymisvaikutuksiin is that even stresses well below the material's ultimate tensile strength can initiate and propagate microscopic cracks over time. When a material is subjected to a load, it deforms. If the load is removed and reapplied repeatedly, or if the load varies cyclically, this repeated deformation can cause localized stress concentrations at microscopic imperfections within the material. These concentrations can lead to the formation of small cracks.

As these cracks grow with each subsequent load cycle, they reduce the effective cross-sectional area of the material, further increasing stress in the remaining material. This failure occurs without the material necessarily reaching its yield strength or tensile strength under a single, static load.
