Väsymislujuus

Väsymislujuus refers to a material's resistance to failure under repeated loading or stress cycles. Unlike static strength, which describes a material's ability to withstand a single, unchanging load, väsymislujuus deals with the cumulative damage that occurs when a material is subjected to fluctuating stresses over time. This phenomenon is also known as fatigue.

When a material is subjected to cyclical loading, microscopic cracks can initiate and propagate, even if the applied stress remains below the material's yield strength. This crack growth continues with each stress cycle, eventually leading to catastrophic failure when the crack reaches a critical size. The magnitude of the applied stress, the stress ratio (the ratio of minimum to maximum stress in a cycle), the presence of stress concentrations (like notches or holes), and the material's microstructure all influence väsymislujuus.

Testing for väsymislujuus typically involves applying a controlled, repeating stress to a sample and observing the number of cycles it can withstand before failure. This data is often plotted on a stress-cycle (S-N) curve, which shows the relationship between the stress amplitude and the fatigue life. Understanding väsymislujuus is crucial in the design of components that experience dynamic loads, such as aircraft wings, bridges, rotating machinery, and automotive parts, to ensure their safe and reliable operation throughout their intended service life.
