Several factors influence color appearance, such as the specific device's capabilities (e.g., monitor gamut, printer ink set), the lighting conditions under which the color is viewed, and the substrate onto which the color is applied. To overcome these variations, color management systems are employed. These systems utilize color profiles, which are essentially data files that describe the color characteristics of a specific device or medium. By using these profiles, software can translate colors from one device's color space to another, aiming for a predictable and repeatable outcome.

Common color spaces used in color matching include RGB (Red, Green, Blue) for digital displays and CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key/Black) for printing.
