It aims to achieve predictable and reproducible color reproduction across different media and devices. The fundamental principle of color management involves establishing a common color language. This is achieved through the use of color profiles, which are small files that describe the unique color characteristics of a specific device. For example, a monitor profile defines how a particular monitor displays colors, while a printer profile defines how a specific printer reproduces colors with a given ink and paper combination.

These profiles are created using specialized hardware called colorimeters or spectrophotometers, which measure the actual color output of a device. Once created, these profiles are used by color management systems, often integrated into operating systems or software applications, to convert colors between different devices. This process ensures that when you design an image on your screen, the colors you perceive are the colors that will be printed or displayed elsewhere, minimizing unexpected color shifts and ensuring brand consistency.
