Väriavaruudettilat, known in English as color spaces, are standardized methods for representing colors. They provide a systematic way to describe and reproduce a range of colors using numerical values. Different color spaces are designed for specific purposes, such as digital displays, printing, or scientific color analysis.

Common color spaces include RGB, which uses combinations of red, green, and blue light to create colors, typically used for screens. CMYK, on the other hand, is used in printing and employs cyan, magenta, yellow, and black inks. HSL (hue, saturation, lightness) and HSV (hue, saturation, value) are more intuitive color spaces that describe colors based on their hue, how pure or intense the color is, and how bright or dark it is.

The choice of color space is crucial for accurate color reproduction. For instance, an image viewed on an RGB monitor may appear different when printed using CMYK inks because the two color spaces have different gamuts, or ranges of reproducible colors. Understanding color spaces helps designers, photographers, and anyone working with digital or print media ensure that colors are consistent and appear as intended across various devices and mediums.
