Väliaikaistiedostot, often referred to as temporary files, are files created by applications or the operating system to store data temporarily. These files are not intended for permanent storage and are typically deleted once they are no longer needed or when the program that created them is closed. Their purpose is to assist in various operations, such as saving unsaved work, holding data during a file transfer, or caching information for faster access.

The use of temporary files can be seen in a wide range of scenarios. For instance, when you're editing a document and haven't saved it, the application might be using a temporary file to hold your progress. Similarly, when downloading a file, the system might create a temporary file to store the data as it arrives before assembling the final file. Web browsers also utilize temporary files, often called cache, to store images, scripts, and other website components, allowing for quicker loading times on subsequent visits.

Managing temporary files is generally handled automatically by the operating system and applications. However, sometimes these files can accumulate and occupy significant disk space, especially if programs crash or are not shut down properly, preventing the automatic deletion process. In such cases, users might manually clear temporary files using built-in system tools or third-party disk cleanup utilities. While generally harmless, it is important to ensure that no essential data is present in temporary files before deleting them, though this is uncommon as they are designed for transient use.
