Factors influencing drainage include soil type, topography, and the presence of impermeable layers. Sandy soils generally drain better than clay soils due to larger pore spaces. Sloping land naturally drains more effectively than flat areas. Compacted soil or the presence of hardpan can impede water movement.

Improving drainage can involve several methods. For gardens and landscaping, amending the soil with organic matter like compost can improve its structure and drainage capabilities. Creating raised beds is another effective solution, elevating the root zone above saturated ground. For more extensive issues, installing drainage systems such as French drains or tile drains may be necessary to channel excess water away from the area. Regular soil aeration can also help.
