Väikeajusse

Väikeajusse is the Estonian term for the cerebellum. It is a major part of the brain located at the back of the skull, beneath the cerebral hemispheres and behind the brainstem. The cerebellum plays a crucial role in motor control. It does not initiate movement but rather coordinates and refines voluntary movements such as posture, balance, coordination, and speech, resulting in smooth and balanced muscular activity. It is also involved in learning motor behaviors.

The cerebellum is composed of two hemispheres and a central vermis. Its surface is highly convoluted, increasing its surface area. Despite its relatively small size, accounting for about 10% of the brain's total volume, it contains more than half of all the neurons in the brain. This high density of neurons contributes to its complex processing capabilities.

Damage to the cerebellum can result in a range of motor impairments, including ataxia, which is a lack of voluntary coordination of muscle movements. Other symptoms can include tremors, difficulties with speech (dysarthria), and problems with balance and gait. While primarily associated with motor functions, research also suggests the cerebellum is involved in some cognitive and emotional functions, though these roles are less understood than its motor contributions.
