Vähitüübid

Vähitüübid refers to the classification of different forms of cancer. Cancer is a disease characterized by uncontrolled cell growth and the ability to invade other tissues. This broad definition encompasses a vast array of conditions, each with unique origins, behaviors, and treatment responses. Broadly, cancers are categorized based on the type of cell from which they originate. Carcinomas, for instance, arise from epithelial cells that line the surfaces of the body, both internally and externally. This group includes common cancers like breast, lung, prostate, and colon cancer.

Sarcomas originate in connective tissues such as bone, cartilage, fat, and muscle. Lymphomas develop in lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell, and affect the lymphatic system. Leukemias are cancers of the blood-forming tissues, typically the bone marrow, leading to the overproduction of abnormal white blood cells. Myelomas specifically arise from plasma cells, another type of immune cell.

Beyond these major categories, further subdivisions are made based on the microscopic appearance of the cancer cells (histology), the specific genetic mutations driving the cancer, and the location of the primary tumor. For example, lung cancer can be further classified into small cell lung cancer and non-small cell lung cancer, with the latter including subtypes like adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Understanding these specific vähitüübid is crucial for accurate diagnosis, prognosis, and the selection of the most effective treatment strategies.
