Váltófutás, also known as relay running, is a track and field event where teams of runners compete in a race, with each runner completing a segment of the total distance. The primary distinguishing feature of a váltófutás is the baton, a small cylindrical object that must be passed from one runner to the next within a designated exchange zone. If the baton is dropped or not passed correctly within this zone, the team is disqualified.

The most common váltófutás events are the 4x100 meter and 4x400 meter relays. In the 4x100m, each runner typically runs a shorter sprint distance, focusing on speed and precise baton exchanges. The 4x400m relay involves longer sprints, requiring a combination of speed and endurance, as well as strategic pacing. Other less common distances exist, such as the 4x200m and medley relays, which combine different sprint distances.
