VobSubtyyppisiä, often shortened to VobSub, refers to a specific subtitle format commonly found on DVD-Video discs. These subtitles are not text-based but are instead image-based, meaning each subtitle line is a small graphical image embedded within the video stream. This image-based nature contributes to their distinct characteristics and limitations.

The primary advantage of VobSub subtitles is their ability to perfectly match the video's original aesthetic, including font styles, colors, and even subtle effects like shadows or outlines. This makes them ideal for preserving the intended visual presentation of the film or show, especially when dealing with complex or stylized text. Because they are images, they also avoid potential issues with font compatibility or rendering errors that can occur with text-based subtitle formats.

However, this image-based approach also presents several drawbacks. VobSub subtitles cannot be easily searched or translated by software, as they are not recognized as actual text. Furthermore, their resolution is fixed, and scaling them up for larger displays can result in pixelation and a loss of clarity. The file size of VobSub data can also be larger compared to equivalent text-based subtitles. Despite these limitations, VobSub remains a prevalent format due to its historical significance and its ability to maintain visual fidelity on standard DVD resolutions.
