Viveridae

Viveridae is not recognized as a valid mammal family in contemporary taxonomy. It is usually encountered as a historical or misspelled form of Viverridae, the family that includes civets and genets. In current classifications, the group is referred to as Viverridae within the order Carnivora.

Viverridae comprises a diverse set of small to medium-sized carnivores found across Africa and Asia. Members are commonly called civets and genets, with additional civet-like species such as palm civets included in the group. Typical members include the African civet and variousGenetta species (genets), as well as palm civets of the genus Paradoxurus. The family shows a range of sizes, coloration patterns, and ecological niches, from forest-dwelling arboreal species to more terrestrial forms.

Morphology of viverrids generally features elongated bodies, short limbs, and long tails, with fur patterns that can be spotted, banded, or plain. Many species possess perineal scent glands used for territorial marking and communication, a trait that has historically contributed to the use of civet musk in perfumery. Dentition and limb structure reflect a carnivorous-omnivorous diet, with some species showing specialized adaptations to fruit or insect feeding.

Ecology and behavior vary by species. Viverrids are primarily crepuscular or nocturnal, with largely solitary lifestyles and diverse diets. Reproduction is typically seasonal or irregular, with litter sizes varying among species. Habitat loss and hunting pressure threaten several viverrid species, though the conservation status ranges from Least Concern to Endangered depending on the taxon.
