Vitrektomiahoito, also known as vitrectomy surgery, is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of the vitreous humor, the gel-like substance that fills the large space in the back of the eye. This procedure is performed by ophthalmologists, specifically vitreoretinal surgeons, to treat a variety of serious eye conditions that affect the retina and vitreous.

The primary indications for vitrectomy include the management of retinal detachments, diabetic retinopathy with vitreous hemorrhage, macular holes, epiretinal membranes, and certain types of eye infections or trauma. The surgery is typically performed under local anesthesia with sedation, although general anesthesia may be used in some cases.

During the procedure, small incisions are made in the sclera (the white part of the eye) to allow the insertion of specialized surgical instruments. These instruments are used to remove the vitreous humor and to address the underlying retinal problem. In many cases, the removed vitreous is replaced with a saline solution, a gas bubble, or silicone oil, depending on the specific condition being treated.

The recovery period after vitrectomy varies depending on the complexity of the surgery and the individual patient. Patients may experience blurred vision, discomfort, and light sensitivity for a period of time. Post-operative care often includes the use of eye drops to prevent infection and reduce inflammation. Follow-up appointments are crucial to monitor healing and assess the outcome of the surgery.
