VisualEditor

VisualEditor is a visual editor interface for MediaWiki-based websites, including Wikipedia. It was developed to provide a more user-friendly alternative to the traditional wikitext markup editing method. The project was initially a collaboration between the Wikimedia Foundation and Wikia before being fully integrated into MediaWiki.

The editor allows users to edit pages using a what-you-see-is-what-you-get (WYSIWYG) interface, making it accessible to those without knowledge of wikitext syntax. It supports formatting text, adding media, creating tables, and inserting references through intuitive toolbar buttons and dropdown menus.

VisualEditor was first made available as a beta feature on Wikipedia in 2013 and gradually improved based on user feedback. It has been criticized for performance issues and limited functionality compared to wikitext editing, but it has significantly improved over time and is now the default editing interface for new users on many Wikimedia projects.

The editor is part of the ContentTranslation extension, which helps translate content between different language editions of Wikimedia projects. It continues to be developed with the goal of making content creation more accessible to a broader audience.
