Virilizing
Virilizing refers to the development of male physical characteristics in a female or, less commonly, in a pre-pubertal male. This process is typically driven by androgens, which are a group of steroid hormones including testosterone. In females, virilization can manifest as the growth of facial and body hair (hirsutism), deepening of the voice, enlargement of the clitoris, increased muscle mass, and changes in scalp hair patterns such as receding hairlines. In males before puberty, virilization can lead to precocious puberty, characterized by early development of secondary sexual characteristics like pubic and axillary hair growth, penile enlargement, and testicular growth.
The causes of virilization are diverse and can include conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS),
Diagnosis of virilizing conditions typically involves a medical history, physical examination, and hormonal blood tests. Imaging
