These circuits are fundamental in various electronic applications where timing is critical. The delay can be achieved through several methods, each with its own advantages and disadvantages in terms of accuracy, cost, and complexity.

One common approach involves using a series of logic gates. For digital signals, a string of inverters can be employed, where each inverter adds a small propagation delay. By chaining a sufficient number of inverters, the desired overall delay can be achieved. Another digital method utilizes shift registers. Data is clocked through the register at a specific frequency, and the delay is determined by the number of stages in the register and the clock rate.

For analog signals, delay can be implemented using passive components like resistors and capacitors to form RC delay lines. The charging and discharging time of the capacitor through the resistor creates the delay. Active components, such as operational amplifiers, can also be incorporated into RC networks to amplify and buffer the delayed signal, improving its integrity. Transmission lines, particularly coaxial cables, exhibit inherent delay properties due to the speed of signal propagation along their length. The length of the cable directly correlates with the introduced delay.
