Viftefeil

Viftefeil is a lesser-known traditional musical instrument that originated in the cultural regions of Central Europe, particularly among the Roma (Gypsy) communities. The name "viftefeil" is derived from the Romani language, where "vifte" means "to play" and "feil" refers to the instrument itself, translating roughly to "playing stick" or "fiddling stick." However, the instrument is more commonly referred to by its broader European name, the *violin*, due to its structural and functional similarities.

The viftefeil resembles a small violin but is often distinguished by its unique tuning and construction. Unlike the standard four-string violin, some versions of the viftefeil feature a fifth string, which is tuned to a lower pitch, adding a distinctive, resonant quality to its sound. This extra string is believed to have been incorporated to enhance the instrument’s versatility in Roma folk music, where it is frequently used in lively dances and storytelling performances.

Historically, the viftefeil played a central role in Roma musical traditions, accompanying songs, dances, and ceremonial rituals.
