Viehherde

Viehherde is a term used in German-speaking agriculture to denote a group of domesticated livestock managed together as a unit. The concept is most commonly applied to cattle herds, but it can also refer to other herbivorous livestock such as sheep, goats, or horses. A Viehherde is organized to facilitate grazing, breeding, protection, and daily farm operations.

Herds are typically composed according to species, age, and production status. In cattle herds, for example, cows with calves form a core unit, supplemented by bulls or steers as needed for breeding and meat production. Social structure within the herd includes hierarchies and bonds that influence movement, feeding, and calving. Herds may migrate seasonally or be moved regularly between pastures to optimize forage use and reduce disease risk.

Management and control are provided by herdsmen or farmers, often with the help of herding dogs, fences, and gates. Practices include rotational grazing, water provision, vaccination, deworming, and routine health checks. In winter or periods of scarce forage, animals may be housed and fed conserved fodder. Welfare considerations emphasize adequate space, social contact, stress minimization, and timely veterinary care.

Viehherden play a central role in traditional farming systems and in modern pasture-based production. They influence pasture management, biodiversity, and nutrient cycling through grazing and dung deposition. The term encompasses both large commercial herds and smaller family groups, reflecting its broad applicability in livestock farming.
