Vibrationseparation

Vibrationseparation is a term describing methods that use mechanical vibration to promote the separation of materials into distinct streams or classes. In solid-solid separation, vibration drives the movement of particles over screens or across inclined decks so that particles segregate by size, density, or shape. Common implementations include vibrating screens, shaker tables, and linear or circular vibratory separators. The applied frequency, amplitude, and deck design influence throughput and separation sharpness. In some systems, vibration is combined with air flow or liquid immersion to aid classification by density or porosity; when fluid is used, the approaches are often called air classification or hydroclassification.

In liquid-solid systems, vibration can improve dewatering, sedimentation, or phase separation by disrupting boundary layers and promoting mixing at the particle-fluid interface. Equipment configurations range from inclined screens and multi-deck separators to compact inline devices, with frequency ranges spanning tens to hundreds of hertz and amplitudes from fractions of a millimeter to several millimeters, tuned to material properties.

Applications span mining and mineral processing (size-based ore separation), recycling (density-based sorting of plastics, glass, and metals), aggregate processing, and certain chemical or food processing tasks involving granulated materials. Vibrationseparation is valued for relative simplicity, scalability, and compatibility with both dry and wet materials, but it can contribute to noise and wear, and performance depends strongly on material characteristics and feed conditions.

Safety considerations include noise control, dust management, and vibration isolation to protect operators and equipment.
