Vetítés

Vetítés refers to the act of projecting motion pictures or other moving images for an audience. The term describes both the event and the technical process of presenting a film, video, or animation to viewers. Etymology: from the Hungarian verb vetíteni, meaning to cast or project light.

In practice, vetítés occurs in cinemas, film festivals, theaters, schools, or private settings. Common types include nyilvános vetítés (public screening), zártkörű vetítés (private screening), próbavetítés (test or preview screening often used for audience feedback or for premieres before general release), and sajtóvetítés (press screening for journalists). A díszbemutató or premiere is a special public vetítés of a film.

Equipment and process: a vetítés requires a projection system, usually a vetítőgép and a screen (vetítővászon), along with sound equipment. Modern venues use digital cinema packages (DCP) and server-based playback, though traditional film projectors remain in some venues. The projectionist or programmed software coordinates sequence, intermissions, and accessibility features.

Legal and organizational aspects: publicly screening a film typically requires rights or licenses held by distributors or venue operators, to comply with copyright and local regulations. Venues may organize curated schedules, festivals, or educational screenings to promote cinema culture and access.

History and role: since the advent of moving pictures, vetítés has been the primary method to share films with audiences. It remains central to film distribution, education, and cultural events, adapting to technological changes while retaining its function as a communal viewing experience.
