Vetbrandblussers

Vetbrandblussers are specialized fire extinguishers designed to combat fires involving flammable liquids, particularly greases and oils commonly found in kitchens and industrial cooking equipment. The term originates from Dutch, where "vetbrand" means grease fire. These extinguishers function by suppressing the oxygen supply to the flame, coating the fire surface with a barrier that prevents re-ignition, and cooling the fuel to below its ignition temperature.

Three primary types are used. Foam extinguishers create a stable foam blanket that floats on the liquid surface, displacing oxygen and preventing vapor release. Carbon dioxide extinguishers replace oxygen with CO₂, lowering the oxygen concentration and suffocating the fire. Powder extinguishers, typically containing sodium bicarbonate or potassium bicarbonate, work by absorbing heat and neutralizing flammable vapours. The choice of extinguisher depends on the fire class, volume of liquid, and environment.

Regulatory standards in the European Union and many other jurisdictions require the placement of suitable extinguishers in commercial kitchens, food processing plants, and other premises where flammable liquids are handled. Codes such as the International Fire Code (IFC) and national directives specify minimum extinguishing capacity, labeling, and maintenance intervals.

Proper training and routine inspection are essential to ensure efficacy. Users should be instructed to direct the extinguisher at the base of the fire and sweep in a controlled pattern until the flame is fully suppressed. Regular checks for pressure, integrity of seals, and correct type usage prevent failures during emergencies.
