Vetbeperking is the dietary practice of limiting fat intake to manage health risks associated with excess fat consumption, support weight control, and improve lipid profiles. The goal is to reduce energy density and ease digestion, while maintaining essential nutrients. In practice, vetbeperking involves reducing saturated fats and trans fats, avoiding fried and fatty foods, and choosing lean protein sources, low-fat dairy, and plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Cooking methods such as grilling, baking, steaming, or poaching are preferred over frying, and portions of high-fat ingredients are moderated.

Guidelines vary by country and by individual health needs. A common target is obtaining about 20-30% of daily calories from fat, with saturated fat limited to under 7-10% of calories. For certain conditions, such as pancreatitis or postoperative recovery, fat intake may be restricted further and adjusted under medical guidance. For general weight management, gradual changes and sustainable eating patterns are recommended rather than abrupt, extreme restrictions.
