Vespucius

Vespucius is a Latinized form of the name of Amerigo Vespucci, an Italian explorer and navigator of the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Born in 1454 in Florence, Vespucci initially worked as a merchant and banker before turning to exploration. He later undertook voyages to the Americas for both the Spanish and Portuguese crowns and died in Seville in 1512.

The narratives of Vespucci were widely published in Europe, especially in the early 1500s. His letters, including

that
these
lands
constituted
a
continent
separate
from
Asia.
He
is
traditionally
associated
with
at
least
two
major
voyages
to
the
New
World.
In
the
late
1490s
he
sailed
along
the
northern
coast
of
South
America
with
Alonso
de
Ojeda,
exploring
areas
that
are
part
of
present-day
Venezuela
and
Colombia.
On
another
expedition,
he
explored
the
Brazilian
coast
and,
according
to
his
letters,
provided
early
descriptions
of
the
vastness
and
geography
of
the
continent.
He
also
participated
in
a
voyage
for
Portugal
along
the
South
American
coast.
the
Mundus
Novus,
circulated
through
scholarly
and
commercial
networks
and
argued
that
the
land
beyond
the
Atlantic
was
a
“New
World”
rather
than
Asia.
These
accounts
influenced
European
geographic
thinking
and
contributed
to
the
naming
of
the
continents.
In
1507,
cartographer
Martin
Waldseemüller
published
a
map
that
popularized
the
name
America,
derived
from
Vespucci’s
Latinized
given
name,
thereby
associating
Vespucci
with
the
discovery
of
a
new
continent.
