Vesitarpeisiin

Vesitarpeisiin is a Finnish term used in water management and agriculture to refer to the amount of water required by a plant, crop, or system to maintain growth, yield, and health. The concept is applied in planning and evaluating irrigation, drought readiness, and overall water use efficiency.

Etymologically, vesitarpeisiin combines ves (water) with tarpeisiin, the illative form of tarve (need), and is used in contexts such as vesitarpeisiin täyttäminen or vesitarpeisiin liittyvät suunnitelmat to denote meeting or addressing water needs. In practice, the term functions as a working descriptor for when water supply meets the physiological requirements of vegetation or urban systems.

In agriculture, vesitarpeisiin is central to irrigation planning, crop scheduling, and drought risk assessment. Estimating water needs typically involves assessing reference evapotranspiration and crop coefficients to determine crop water requirements over time. Common frameworks use formulas such as ETc = ET0 × Kc, where ET0 is reference evapotranspiration and Kc is a crop coefficient, often calculated with internationally applied methods like the FAO Penman–Monteith approach. In urban and environmental planning, vesitarpeisiin informs water allocation, reservoir management, and conservation strategies to ensure reliable supply during dry periods.
