Vesisuihkumoottorit

Vesisuihkumoottorit, also known as water jet engines or hydrojets, are a type of marine propulsion system. They function by drawing water into an intake, accelerating it using an internal impeller or pump, and then expelling it at high velocity through a nozzle at the rear of the vessel. This expulsion of water creates thrust, propelling the boat forward.

Unlike traditional propellers, which are exposed and can be susceptible to damage from debris or shallow water, water jet systems are largely enclosed within the hull of the vessel. This makes them particularly well-suited for operation in shallow waters, areas with submerged obstacles, or where propeller damage is a significant concern.

The primary components of a vesisuihkumoottori include an intake grate, an impeller or pump, a drive shaft connected to an engine, and a nozzle. Steering is typically achieved by maneuvering a deflector or nozzle that redirects the water jet's thrust.

Vesisuihkumoottorit offer several advantages, including excellent maneuverability, especially at low speeds, and the ability to operate in very shallow depths. They are also generally quieter than propeller-driven systems and produce less vibration. However, they can be less efficient at very high speeds compared to some propeller designs, and their initial cost may be higher. They are commonly found on high-speed ferries, personal watercraft, patrol boats, and workboats operating in challenging environments.
