Vesihidosten is a Finnish term that translates to "water ballast" in English. It refers to the use of water stored in tanks or other compartments on a vessel for ballast. This water is used to improve stability, adjust trim, or increase the draft of a ship or boat. By altering the amount of water in these ballast tanks, the vessel's weight distribution can be manipulated, which is crucial for safe and efficient operation, especially in changing sea conditions or when the vessel is carrying varying loads.

The concept of water ballast is fundamental in naval architecture and maritime engineering. In many cargo ships, for instance, ballast water is taken on when the ship is empty to ensure it remains stable and can navigate safely. As cargo is loaded, the ballast water is often discharged. For smaller vessels like sailboats, water ballast can be used to increase stability and reduce heeling, or tilting, caused by wind or waves. It offers a flexible and often cost-effective method for managing a vessel's balance compared to fixed ballast materials.

However, the use of water ballast also presents environmental considerations. Ballast water discharged from a vessel can contain invasive aquatic species, microorganisms, and sediments that can have detrimental effects on the ecosystems of recipient waters. International regulations, such as the IMO's Ballast Water Management Convention, are in place to manage and minimize these risks by requiring ships to treat their ballast water before it is discharged. This management typically involves filtration, UV treatment, or chemical methods to kill or remove harmful organisms.
