Vesebetegségi, a Hungarian term, translates to kidney disease or renal disease in English. It broadly refers to any condition that impairs the kidneys' ability to perform their essential functions. These functions include filtering waste products from the blood, regulating blood pressure, maintaining electrolyte balance, and producing hormones that stimulate red blood cell production and bone health.

Kidney diseases can arise from a variety of causes. Chronic conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure are the most common culprits, as they can damage the delicate blood vessels within the kidneys over time. Other causes include autoimmune diseases such as lupus, genetic disorders like polycystic kidney disease, infections, and prolonged exposure to certain medications or toxins. Acute kidney injury, a sudden loss of kidney function, can also occur due to severe illness, trauma, or dehydration.

The symptoms of kidney disease can vary widely depending on the cause and severity. Early stages may be asymptomatic, making regular check-ups crucial for individuals with risk factors. As the disease progresses, symptoms can include fatigue, swelling in the legs and feet, changes in urination (frequency, color, or volume), nausea, loss of appetite, and itching.

Diagnosis typically involves blood and urine tests to assess kidney function and detect abnormalities. Imaging studies like ultrasounds or CT scans may also be used. Treatment strategies aim to manage the underlying cause, slow the progression of the disease, and alleviate symptoms. This can involve medication, dietary changes, lifestyle modifications, and in advanced cases, dialysis or kidney transplantation.
