Versionhallittua, literally meaning "version controlled" in Finnish, refers to the practice of managing changes to documents, code, or other data over time. It is a fundamental concept in software development, content collaboration, and any field where multiple revisions of the same material are produced. The key idea is to maintain a history of changes, allowing users to compare, revert, or branch from previous states.

The origins of version control can be traced back to the early 1960s, when mainframe computers first required methods to track modifications to batch programs. The first widely adopted system, Digital Equipment Corporation’s VCS, provided a binary change log. By the 1990s, distributed version control systems (DVCS) such as Git and Mercurial emerged, offering greater flexibility for collaborative work. Centralized systems like Subversion and CVS remain in use, especially in legacy environments.

Versionhallittua systems typically store a series of snapshots or deltas, each identified by a unique hash or revision number.
