Vereinigungsfreiheit, or freedom of association, is the right of individuals to form, join and participate in organizations or associations such as political parties, trade unions, clubs and non-governmental organizations to pursue shared interests. It covers the creation and maintenance of associations as well as the ability to engage in their activities, including meetings and advocacy, within the bounds of the law. The concept is a fundamental civil liberty recognized in many constitutions and international human rights instruments.
