Verdae is a fictional city-state in the eastern archipelago of the Verdant Sea in the fantasy world of Eldoria. It serves as a major maritime trading hub and political center, linking inland valleys with distant ports through a network of caravans and ships.

Geography and climate: Verdae sits on a natural harbor protected by limestone promontories. The surrounding hills shelter orchards and vineyards, giving the city a mildly temperate maritime climate with regular winds that favor sailing year round.

History: Credited to Verdic traders around 1100 PD, Verdae grew from a fortified trading post into an autonomous city-state. It gained de facto independence after the Concordat of Sable Bay in 1345 PD, subsequently developing a merchant-centered government and a tradition of naval neutrality during regional conflicts.

Governance: The Verdan Council, composed of representatives from merchant guilds, landowners, and major temples, governs the city. An elected Grand Bail oversees executive functions. The council operates through committees on security, trade, and public works.

Economy and demographics: Verdae relies on fishing, shipbuilding, and cross-sea trade. Principal exports include timber, wine, and salted fish; imports cover grain and religious manuscripts. The population is around 120,000, with neighborhoods including the Old Harbor, Market Quarter, and New Districts. Verdic and Common Tongue are spoken, with minority communities preserving regional traditions.

Cultural notes and landmarks: The city hosts the Festival of Lanterns each autumn and is known for its marble market and the Skypier Fortress. Culinary traditions blend coastal and inland ingredients, such as kelp stews and herb-roasted lamb.
