Verbindungsdose

Verbindungsdose is a term used in electrical installations for a protective enclosure that houses and protects connections between electrical conductors. It serves as a safe, accessible point for splices, taps and branching of cables, while preventing accidental contact with live parts and providing insulation and mechanical protection.

Construction and varieties

Verbindungsdosen are typically made from plastic (such as PVC or polycarbonate) or metal. They have one or more cable entries to accept wires, often with clamps or grommets, and a removable cover that allows access for maintenance or modification. They can be installed in different installation contexts: Unterputz-Verbindungsdose (flush-mounted in a wall) or Aufputz-Verbindungsdose (surface-mounted on a wall or other surface). For outdoor or damp locations, weatherproof variants with appropriate IP protection ratings (for example IP54, IP65) are used.

Applications

They are used to join cables, extend circuits, or create junction points in residential, commercial, and industrial electrical systems. The inside typically accommodates terminal blocks or other connectors. Dosen should provide accessible points for inspection and changes, and are not intended to conceal live parts behind plaster or other permanent coverings.

Safety and standards

Installations should comply with relevant standards and regulations, such as DIN VDE in Germany and corresponding EN standards. The enclosure must be appropriately sized for the number and cross-section of conductors, and cable entries must maintain the required protection level. The cover should be kept in place during operation, and the box should not be overfilled to ensure safe insulation and heat dissipation.
