Flush-mounted is a term used to describe hardware or fixtures installed so their outer surface is level with, or slightly recessed into, the surrounding surface. It is used across architecture, interior design, and electronics to describe fittings that do not protrude. The hyphenated form flush-mounted is common in technical writing, though some usages omit the hyphen.

Installations typically require careful preparation of a recess or mounting cavity, such as countersinking, mortising, or installing a compatible backing behind the surface. The goal is to seat the device flush with the plane while preserving access for operation and maintenance. Seals, gaskets, or weatherproofing materials are often used when the panel is exposed to the elements or moisture. Adequate space for cables, ventilation, or heat sinks must be planned.

Applications span residential and commercial architecture (recessed lighting, wall outlets, switches, and ventilation grilles), furnishings (flush-mounted handles and hardware), audio (in-wall or in-ceiling speakers), surveillance (recessed cameras), and automotive or marine contexts (recessed instruments and fittings).

Advantages include a streamlined appearance, reduced snag risk, and easier cleaning, as well as better aerodynamics or water resistance in certain installations. Drawbacks can include higher installation complexity, greater cost, potential issues with heat dissipation, and more challenging access for replacement or repair.
