Venymäkoettelukäyrissä, often translated as strain-stress curves or stress-strain diagrams, are graphical representations used in materials science and engineering to illustrate the mechanical behavior of a material under tensile load. These curves plot the stress experienced by a material against the resulting strain, providing critical information about its properties.

The typical venymäkoettelukäyrissä begins with a linear elastic region where stress is directly proportional to strain. In this phase, the material deforms elastically and will return to its original shape upon unloading. The slope of this initial linear portion is known as the Young's modulus or modulus of elasticity, a measure of the material's stiffness.

As the stress increases beyond the elastic limit, the material enters the plastic deformation region. Here, the strain no longer directly corresponds to the stress, and permanent deformation occurs. Within the plastic region, a point known as the yield strength is identified, representing the stress at which significant plastic deformation begins.

Further along the curve, the ultimate tensile strength is reached, which is the maximum stress the material can withstand before it starts to neck down. Necking is a localized reduction in cross-sectional area. Finally, the curve concludes at the fracture point, where the material breaks. The area under the venymäkoettelukäyrissä up to fracture represents the toughness or energy absorbed by the material before failure. These curves are essential for material selection, design, and failure analysis.
