Venymäliuskantureita, known in English as strain gauges, are widely used sensors for measuring strain or deformation. They operate on the principle that the electrical resistance of a conductor changes proportionally to its mechanical strain. A typical strain gauge consists of a thin metallic foil or wire arranged in a grid pattern on a flexible backing material. When this foil is subjected to stretching or compression, its length changes, and its cross-sectional area is altered. This change in physical dimensions directly affects its electrical resistance.

The strain gauge is bonded to the surface of the object whose strain is to be measured. As the object deforms, the strain gauge deforms with it. This deformation causes a change in the resistance of the strain gauge's conductive grid. This change in resistance is then measured, typically using a Wheatstone bridge circuit. The Wheatstone bridge allows for precise measurement of small resistance changes by comparing the resistance of the strain gauge to known reference resistors. The output of the bridge can be calibrated to directly indicate the amount of strain present.

Strain gauges are incredibly versatile and are employed in a vast array of applications. They are fundamental components in load cells and pressure sensors, used to measure forces and pressures in everything from industrial machinery to scientific experiments. They are also critical in structural health monitoring, allowing engineers to assess the stress and strain on bridges, buildings, and aircraft. Furthermore, they find use in biomechanics for studying human and animal movement, and in automotive engineering for testing vehicle components and performance. The accuracy and sensitivity of strain gauges make them indispensable tools for quantitative mechanical analysis.
