Key objectives are to control pollutants and moisture, provide adequate fresh air, manage temperature and humidity, and minimize energy use and noise. Design considerations include occupancy levels, space function, contaminant sources, local climate, building envelope performance and regulatory requirements.

Tools used in ventilationsdesign range from manual calculations and psychrometric analysis to computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for detailed airflow and contaminant dispersion modeling. Standards and guidelines such as ASHRAE, EN and national building codes inform minimum ventilation rates, filtration efficiency and testing procedures. Commissioning, performance verification and regular maintenance are essential for long-term effectiveness.

Sustainable ventilationsdesign emphasizes heat recovery, demand-controlled ventilation, high-efficiency fans and integrated controls to reduce energy consumption while maintaining indoor environmental quality. In specialized contexts—laboratories, healthcare, industrial processes—design must also address containment, pressurization and specialist filtration requirements.
