Venenerkrankung, also known as venereal disease, refers to a group of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) that affect the genitourinary tract. The term "venereal" originates from the Latin word "venere," meaning "to beget," reflecting the historical association of these diseases with sexual reproduction. Common venereal diseases include syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections.

Syphilis is characterized by a primary sore at the site of infection, followed by a latent period, and eventually, secondary and tertiary stages that can affect various organs, including the brain and heart. Gonorrhea causes symptoms such as urethral discharge, pelvic pain, and infertility in women. Chlamydia often presents with no symptoms but can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility if left untreated. HSV infections, particularly HSV-2, can cause genital ulcers and recurrent infections.

The transmission of venereal diseases occurs primarily through sexual contact, including vaginal, anal, and oral sex. Prevention strategies include the use of condoms, practicing safe sex, and regular screening for STIs. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for preventing complications and reducing the risk of transmission to sexual partners.
