Velten

Velten is a town located in the Oberhavel district of the German state of Brandenburg, approximately 30 kilometres north of Berlin. The municipality covers an area of about 47 square kilometres and has a population of roughly 20,000 residents. It lies on the western edge of the Berlin-Havel lowland and is bordered by the towns of Werder, Schwedt, and Frankfurt (Oder). The local landscape is characterised by gentle hills, agricultural fields, and a network of small rivers, the most significant of which is the Schleuse basin that channels waters towards the Havel River.

The first documented mention of Velten dates back to the early 12th century, when the settlement was referred to in a charter of the Margraviate of Brandenburg. Throughout the Middle Ages, it remained a modest agrarian community before becoming part of the Kingdom of Prussia in the 18th century. During the 20th century, Velten experienced industrial growth, notably in the manufacture of textile machinery and later the production of electrical equipment. After German reunification in 1990, the town transitioned to a mixed economy, with small and medium-sized enterprises in manufacturing, services, and tourism contributing to the local economy.

Velten is well connected to the capital through the S-Bahn network, with services on line S2 and S5 linking the town to central Berlin and the eastern suburbs. Major roads such as the B2 and B103 provide access to neighbouring districts and the Autobahn A13 corridor. The presence of the Baltrivka railway line also facilitates regional freight transport. Public bus routes serve both intra- and inter-town connectivity.

The town hosts several cultural and recreational facilities, including the Velten Cultural Center, which hosts concerts and community events. The annual Velten Music Festival attracts visitors from the wider region. Sports clubs, particularly those focused on football and cycling, enjoy strong community participation. Notable figures from Velten include the composer Hermann Kessler and the 19th-century painter Franz von Schober, whose works are displayed in local museums.
