Brandenburg

Brandenburg is a federal state (Bundesland) in northeastern Germany. It surrounds the national capital Berlin, forming the eastern part of the Berlin-Brandenburg metropolitan region, but Berlin remains a separate city-state. The state’s capital is Potsdam. Brandenburg covers about 29,654 square kilometers and has a population of roughly 2.5 million, making it among Germany's more sparsely populated states.

Geography and environment: The landscape includes low plains, numerous lakes, and extensive forests. The Spreewald, a UNESCO biosphere reserve, lies in the south-eastern part of the state. The Oder River forms part of Brandenburg’s eastern border with Poland.

History: The region is part of historic Prussia and was incorporated into East Germany after World War II. Following German reunification in 1990, Brandenburg was reestablished as a state, with Potsdam near Berlin serving as the capital. The area is known for its palaces, parks, and historic towns.

Economy and society: Brandenburg has a diversified economy with agriculture, manufacturing, and growing service and energy sectors, including wind power. The proximity to Berlin supports commuting and services. Tourism centers on castles and palaces, such as Sanssouci near Potsdam, the Spreewald, and other nature and cultural attractions.

Culture and notable features: Potsdam’s Sanssouci Palace, the Babelsberg Film Studio, and the cultural landscape around lakes attract visitors. The state hosts several universities and research institutions, notably the University of Potsdam.

Transport and administration: The state is divided into districts (Landkreise) and independent towns, with Potsdam as capital. It is connected to Berlin by road and rail, and to international destinations via Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER).
