Velarization
Velarization is a secondary articulation in which the tongue body or dorsum retracts toward the velum (the soft palate) during the articulation of a consonant. This retraction gives the consonant a darker, more posterior or “velarized” quality, and it can accompany a primary place of articulation such as alveolar, dental, or velar.
