Veganläder, also known as vegan leather, is a synthetic or plant‑based material that emulates the appearance and feel of traditional leather but does not utilize animal hide. The term gained popularity in the late 20th and early 21st centuries as consumer interest in sustainable and cruelty‑free products increased. Early iterations were heavily reliant on polyurethane or polyvinyl chloride coatings applied to cloth or paper substrates. In recent years, advances in biotechnology and materials science have produced a wider range of vegan leather types, including products derived from pineapple leaves (Piñatex), cork, mushroom mycelium (Mylo), and recycled plastics.

The manufacturing processes vary significantly. Polyurethane (PU) vegan leather is typically assembled by layering a polymer foam with a decorative polymer film and a backing. This process requires solvent evaporation and can produce volatile organic compounds. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) variants use chlorine‑based monomers and involve higher energy input, though PVC can be made with recycled content. Plant‑based options usually involve growing the raw material, mechanical or enzymatic extraction, and then converting it into a sheet or textile. Some botanically derived materials require less chemical processing, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and toxic waste.

Environmental and animal welfare considerations are central to the appeal of veganläder. While it avoids the direct use of animal skins, the resource intensity and chemical burden of synthetic alternatives can be substantial. A life‑cycle assessment is essential when comparing different vegan leather types, as some bio‑based varieties demonstrate lower ecological footprints than conventional leather or certain synthetic forms. Nevertheless, vegan leather offers manufacturers a versatile, cruelty‑free alternative that can be produced to emulate various textures, finishes, and durability levels demanded by fashion, interior design, automotive, and sporting goods markets.
